AS Monaco verslaat Club Brugge en neemt goede uitgangspositie

AS Monaco heeft zijn eerste wedstrijd op de Otten Innovation Cup 2026 met 2-0 gewonnen van Club Brugge. In een wedstrijd, die vorig jaar het affiche van één van de halve finales was, met kansen aan beide kanten waren de Monegasken het meest effectief in de afronding.

De eerste mogelijkheid van de wedstrijd was al vroeg voor AS Monaco. Na enige onduidelijkheid bij Club Brugge over de uitvoering van een indribbel kwam de bal bij de Franse ploeg terecht, wat resulteerde in een kopkans. In de openingsfase ging het spel vervolgens op en neer, maar grote kansen bleven aanvankelijk uit.

Na elf minuten was AS Monaco dicht bij de openingstreffer. Haddani kreeg een grote schietkans, maar zag zijn inzet voorlangs het doel verdwijnen.

Halverwege de eerste helft liet Club Brugge zich van zijn beste kant zien. Van Britsom waagde van ongeveer twintig meter een poging, maar de doelman van AS Monaco wist de bal knap naar de zijkant te verwerken.

Waar Club Brugge niet tot scoren kwam, sloeg AS Monaco wel toe. Gomes da Veiga stond nog maar net binnen de lijnen toen hij direct zijn stempel op de wedstrijd drukte door de openingstreffer voor zijn rekening te nemen: 1-0.

Na een korte hydration break bleef AS Monaco gevaarlijk. Een ogenschijnlijk ongevaarlijk schot werd onderweg van richting veranderd door een verdediger van Club Brugge. Doelman De Corte moest alles uit de kast halen om een tweede tegentreffer te voorkomen en wist de bal ternauwernood over het doel te tikken.

Die tweede treffer liet echter niet lang op zich wachten. In de 38e minuut was het Djelloul Bencherif die het net wist te vinden en daarmee de voorsprong van AS Monaco verdubbelde naar 2-0.

Club Brugge probeerde in de slotfase nog iets terug te doen, maar wist het verschil niet meer te verkleinen. Daardoor trok AS Monaco uiteindelijk verdiend aan het langste eind en sloot het de wedstrijd af met een overtuigende 2-0 overwinning.

AS Monaco Defeat Club Brugge to Make Strong Start

AS Monaco opened their Otten Innovation Cup 2026 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Club Brugge. In a match, last year one of the semi-finales, that featured chances at both ends, the French side proved the more clinical team in front of goal.

The first opportunity of the game fell to AS Monaco. Following some confusion at Club Brugge regarding the execution of a dribble-in, the ball broke kindly for the Monegasques, who managed to create the first headed chance of the afternoon.

The match then settled into a balanced rhythm, with both teams enjoying spells of possession and creating a handful of promising situations without seriously troubling the goalkeepers. The best chance of the opening stages came after eleven minutes when Haddani found himself in a dangerous position for AS Monaco, only to see his effort drift wide of the post.

Club Brugge responded midway through the first half. Van Britsom tried his luck from around twenty metres out, forcing the Monaco goalkeeper into a solid save as he pushed the ball away from danger.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 27th minute. Gomes da Veiga had only just entered the pitch when he made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net with his first major involvement to hand AS Monaco a 1-0 lead.

Shortly afterwards, play was briefly halted for a hydration break as temperatures remained high.

AS Monaco nearly doubled their advantage following the restart. A seemingly harmless effort took a deflection off a Club Brugge defender, forcing goalkeeper De Corte into a sharp reaction save. The Brugge shot-stopper managed to tip the ball over the crossbar and keep his side within touching distance.

However, the second goal arrived just a few minutes later. In the 38th minute, Djelloul Bencherif added AS Monaco’s second of the afternoon, extending the lead to 2-0 and giving the French side a comfortable cushion heading into the remainder of the contest.

Club Brugge continued to battle and looked for a way back into the match, but AS Monaco remained in control and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.

The victory gives AS Monaco a winning start to their Otten Innovation Cup 2026 campaign, while Club Brugge will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
