The jubilee edition of the Otten Innovation Cup produced a surprising, yet deserved winner. In the final, debutants AS Monaco defeated favorites Atlético Madrid 3-1, taking sporting revenge for the group stage match in which Atlético had come out on top 2-1.
Explosive start
The final had a lightning start. After just 17 seconds, Monaco were forced to continue with one man less following a yellow card. Atlético smelled blood and immediately pressed forward. After four minutes, that pressure paid off with the opening goal from Gonzalo Gross. The Spaniards, however, could not enjoy their lead for long, as Safouane Benzahra equalized for Monaco just four minutes later.
Monaco take control
While Atlético struggled to create danger after that, Monaco gradually took control of the game. Just before halftime, Nacim Dendani struck a painful blow by making it 2-1. It gave the French confidence and left the Madrid side with plenty to ponder in the dressing room.
Decision after the break
In the second half, Yasir Mouh effectively sealed the match early on by scoring the 3-1. Atlético tried to respond but frustration got the better of them. Not through dirty play, but clearly shaken, they failed to create further threats. To make matters worse, the Spanish head coach was shown a red card in the closing stages for persistent protests against the referee.
Monaco make history
The score remained unchanged, and AS Monaco crowned themselves winners of the 75th Otten Innovation Cup. With fresh and energetic football, the French club claimed victory in this prestigious youth tournament.
