Following Palmeiras’ triumph in the Otten Innovation Cup final against PSV, we caught up with one of the Brazilian side’s players, Fábio Mamadú Sadjo Só, to reflect on the tournament, discuss his recent move from England to Brazil and explain the winning mentality that drives Palmeiras’ academy teams.
A Memorable Tournament Victory
Fresh from lifting the trophy, Fábio Mamadú Sadjo Só spoke proudly about his team's achievement. Facing different opponents from across the world made the tournament a valuable experience, both on and off the pitch.
“It was a really good event. We faced different types of football, different styles of pressing and different cultures. We come from Brazil, where the culture is different again, so it was a great experience.”
According to the player, Palmeiras approached every match with the same objective: winning.
“No matter what happens during a game, we have to stay concentrated, stay in the match and find a way to win.”
A New Adventure in Brazil
The tournament winner is still at the beginning of his Palmeiras journey. Having joined the club just a month ago, the move represented a major change after spending time in England.
“I came from Burnley Football Club. I wanted to try something new and different. When Palmeiras came through the door, it was an opportunity I couldn't refuse.”
The attraction was clear. Palmeiras' reputation for success played a significant role in his decision.
“It’s a club that always wins trophies. You always want to be part of a team that wins. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
Despite the successful start, Fábio remains focused on his personal development.
“I’m still learning. I’m still a young player. I need to keep my feet on the ground, keep working hard and continue improving every day.”
Mentality Made the Difference in the Final
Asked what decided the final, the Palmeiras player immediately pointed to mentality rather than tactics.
“A final is always a special game. It doesn’t matter how good you are, finals are decided by mentality and how you think.”
Even after taking a 2-0 lead, he felt the match was far from over.
“2-0 can be a dangerous score. One goal can change everything in a matter of seconds. We had to stick together, keep defending and fight until the end.”
He believes that determination and collective commitment ultimately made the difference.
“The key is staying together, defending for each other and doing everything possible to win.”
The Palmeiras Way
One theme returned throughout the interview: Palmeiras’ relentless desire to win.
“The biggest difference at Palmeiras is the mentality. The only option is to win. There is no option to lose.”
Having experienced youth football in England, he noticed a different approach after arriving in Brazil.
“When I played in England, there was a strong focus on development. Here, development is important too, but winning is also part of development.”
Palmeiras aims to combine both elements.
“Some teams focus mainly on developing players. Palmeiras wants to develop players and win games. For us, winning is extremely important.”
That attitude extends across every level of the club and helps create a highly competitive environment for young players.
Looking Ahead
While the team celebrated its tournament success, Fábio remained focused on the future.
“My goal is to keep working hard, listen to the coaches and take every opportunity that comes my way.”
He also made sure to praise the staff behind Palmeiras’ success.
“We have an amazing coaching staff. Without them, we wouldn’t be here. Their messages about togetherness and hard work have helped us get this far.”
The young player is convinced that Palmeiras’ academy can compete with anyone in world football.
“People sometimes underestimate Palmeiras, but the club is bigger than many think. I believe the academy is one of the best in the world. We have the facilities, the staff and the players to compete against any team.”
With a trophy in hand and a bright future ahead, the Palmeiras midfielder leaves Eindhoven convinced that both he and his team are only getting started.
