Benfica heeft zich geplaatst voor de wedstrijd om de vijfde en zesde plaats op de Otten Innovation Cup 2026. In de kruisfinale voor de plaatsen 5 tot en met 8 was de Portugese ploeg met 4-0 te sterk voor Adelaide United.

Benfica begon sterk aan de wedstrijd en was al vroeg dichtbij de openingstreffer. Neves raakte de paal en zag vervolgens hoe doelman Cesko de rebound van Castel-Branco knap wist te keren. In de zevende minuut was het alsnog raak. Neves ontving de bal rond de middenlijn, zette een lange rush in en rondde beheerst af voor de 1-0.

Na die openingsfase werd het duel kansenarm. Benfica creëerde na rust de eerste mogelijkheid via Santos, die over schoot. Adelaide United was vervolgens dicht bij de gelijkmaker toen Tatu zijn inzet van de lijn gehaald zag worden door een Benfica-verdediger. Aan de andere kant kreeg Castel-Branco een grote kans op de 2-0, maar hij schoot net over.

De wedstrijd kantelde definitief in de slotfase. Ondanks een tijdelijke ondertalsituatie na een gele kaart en vier minuten tijdstraf voor Chris Irakoze, liep Benfica verder uit. Benfica Advance to Match for Fifth Place with Convincing Win Over Adelaide United

Benfica booked their place in the match for fifth and sixth position at the Otten Innovation Cup 2026 after a convincing 4-0 victory over Adelaide United in the placement match for positions five to eight.

The Portuguese side made a strong start and came close to opening the scoring within minutes. Neves struck the post before goalkeeper Cesko produced an excellent save to deny Castel-Branco on the rebound. Benfica's breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute when Neves picked up the ball near the halfway line, drove towards goal and calmly finished to make it 1-0.

After the lively opening stages, clear-cut chances became scarce. Benfica continued to control proceedings and created the first opportunity of the second half through Santos, whose effort flew over the crossbar.

Adelaide United's best chance to get back into the match came midway through the second half. Tatu looked set to score, but a Benfica defender made a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve the lead. Benfica responded immediately and almost doubled their advantage when Ferreira sent Castel-Branco through on goal, only for the forward to shoot narrowly over.

The match was effectively decided in the closing stages. Despite temporarily being reduced to ten men after Chris Irakoze received a yellow card and a four-minute time penalty, Benfica struck three more times. Djalo doubled the lead before full-back Coelho added a third. Moments later, Almeida rounded off a fine move by delicately chipping the ball over Cesko to make it 4-0.

Adelaide United's difficult afternoon ended on a disappointing note when Israel Monga was shown a red card for bringing down a Benfica player who had broken through on goal, leaving the Australians to finish the match with ten men.

The victory sends Benfica into tomorrow's match for fifth and sixth place against Manchester United, while Adelaide United will compete for seventh and eighth place against Club Brugge.
